How a Tutor for Master’s Degree Can Transform Your Academic Performance

While universities provide strong instruction, alongside valuable study skills training, most Master’s programmes offer limited guidance to support students on a one-to-one basis. A private tutor for Master’s degree provides the intensive, personalised support that can make the difference between struggling and excelling in your postgraduate studies. In addition, your private tutor can provide valuable help and support that your university or university supervisor would generally not be required to do (or have time to do). As such, you get to have a level of help and support that helps you thrive at postgraduate level.

How to Find a Qualified Private Tutor for Your Master’s Degree

The digital age has transformed how we access academic support. While online platforms give you access to a much wider pool of talented tutors and coaches than ever before, they’ve also created opportunities for scam artists to exploit vulnerable students. In the UK, there are no regulatory barriers preventing anyone from advertising themselves as a “tutor” or offering dissertation help services. This means that alongside genuinely excellent and qualified professionals, you’ll find many poorly qualified individuals and outright fraudsters. This section provides essential guidance to help you navigate these waters safely and find legitimate, expert support for your Master’s studies.

Note that in the UK, anyone can set themselves up as a “tutor” and can advertise their services in helping students with dissertations. While there are excellent tutors and coaches out there, not all tutors and coaches are well-qualified or experienced in supervising or guiding postgraduates.

Avoid Essay Mills and Dissertation Scams

When searching for academic support, be extremely cautious of “essay mills” or “dissertation writing services.” Despite the UK government passing the Skills and Post-16 Education Act 2022 to address essay mills and contract cheating, many international operators continue to offer such services as they fall outside the remit of UK legislation. These operations are often scams that take your money without delivering quality work, and using such services constitutes academic misconduct that could result in failing your degree. Check out Dr Nicky’s video article on why you should avoid essay mills and dissertation writing services at all costs.

Essential Qualifications to Look For

A qualified tutor to help with Master’s degree should possess significantly higher qualifications and experience than you currently have. When looking at different websites for different tutors or coaches offering their services to university students, make sure that you satisfy yourself that the individuals in question are suitable for Master’s level coaching and tutoring.

There are many firms which offer tutoring and support on “dissertations” generally, and appear to offer their services to undergraduates and postgraduates alike. However, as a very senior academic, I would offer some caution here. There is a big difference between Master’s (and PhD) level work and undergraduate work – and a tutor who only holds an undergraduate degree themselves will not be  adequately qualified to act as a tutor to you at Master’s level.

To provide general support for you at Master’s degree level, in my view a tutor or coach must have the following at an absolute minimum –

  • PhD qualification – Your tutor should hold a doctorate, demonstrating advanced research and academic writing expertise
  • Recent university experience – Look for someone who has worked as a lecturer or above at a respectable university for at least 3 years
  • Proven track record – Seek evidence of successful Master’s student supervision and teaching experience
  • Relevant academic expertise – Ensure they understand the rigours and expectations of postgraduate study

Meet your Potential Tutor First

Before you take the leap, I’d advise meeting up with the tutor first as well as doing a few checks to make sure they’re appropriately qualified.

Any private tutor worth dealing with will typically offer prospective clients a free 20-30 minute chat online. This kind of “no commitment” meeting is crucial for you. It enables the tutor establish your needs (make sure you’ve thought about this in advance – and write a short list of things you hope the tutor can help with, and by when) – and in turn, provides the basis for the tutor identifying whether they can help or not.

A free meeting in advance is a great opportunity to assess if you’ll gel with the person too. This is a really crucial factor if you’re going to be working with them. You’ll be able to establish through chatting to them whether they’re a good fit for your needs and helping you reach your goals.

In addition to having a general chat about your needs and goals, I’d also recommend that you do some basic quality checks –

  • Request a detailed CV showing their academic qualifications, teaching experience, and research background
  • Ask about their experience supervising Master’s dissertations and supporting postgraduate students
  • Verify their university affiliations and current or recent academic positions
  • Enquire about their teaching philosophy and approach to student support

Good tutors should make it easy to find and check their academic credentials, academic experience and track record (for example, see the home page where you’ll find a link to my CV – which gives full details of my qualifications, experience and track-record).

Remember: A qualified private tutor should have substantially more academic credentials and experience than you. If they can’t demonstrate this clearly, look elsewhere.

Red Flags: Warning Signs of Unqualified or Fraudulent Tutors

Be Cautious of These Warning Signs:

  • Tutors who can’t provide university credentials – Any legitimate academic tutor should readily share their CV, qualifications, and employment history. If they’re evasive about their background, this is a major red flag.
  • Those offering to write your work for you – Legitimate tutors and coaches guide and teach; they don’t complete assignments for students. Anyone offering to write your dissertation or coursework is facilitating academic misconduct.
  • Suspiciously low prices – Qualified academics with PhDs and university experience command professional rates. Extremely cheap services often indicate poor quality, unqualified tutors, or outright scams.
  • No clear academic background – Avoid tutors who can’t demonstrate relevant postgraduate qualifications, teaching experience, or understanding of UK academic standards and expectations.
  • Pressure tactics or unrealistic promises – Be wary of tutors who guarantee specific grades, pressure you to pay large sums upfront, or promise unrealistic timeframes for completing complex academic work.

Frequently Asked Questions About Private Tutors for Master’s Degrees

What are the benefits of using a private tutor for a Master’s dissertation?

  • Rapid turnaround for struggling students – Students who use a private tutor can rapidly turn around a situation where they’ve fallen badly behind with their dissertations. An expert private tutor can help them quickly regain focus and develop a robust plan for making good progress.
  • Higher quality academic work – Students who use a private tutor tend to produce better argued, structured, and written work when an expert academic has been engaged to closely guide the work.
  • Increased productivity and focus – Students become far more productive and more effective with their time when using a private tutor. A private tutor helps students to focus on the right things that make a big difference in pushing a project forward – with the result that less time is wasted on things that do not matter.
  • Improved chances of success – Students increase their chances of passing their Master’s dissertation; working with an academic professional will help students achieve their best result. In addition, a good and high-integrity private tutor or coach will emphasise the importance of also using a supervisor too – where the supervisor is also engaged, this also maximises a student’s chances of performing well.
  • Essential support and companionship – Many students feel rather alone during the Master’s dissertation research period. With only a tiny number of hours contact time with their supervisor, most of the project comes down to the student alone. But with a private tutor, the student benefits from having someone to talk to about their project and the steps they are planning to take – or even sharing problems or concerns.

Can a tutor help with specific subjects or just general skills?

This depends upon the tutor in question and your needs. Most tutors and coaches for Master’s degrees will be able to help you produce a stronger dissertation by focusing on your research, writing and presentation skills. This tends to add great value for students given that they will certainly be assigned a supervisor within their university to address subject-specific matters. If you are looking for a private tutor to help you on the topic in question, make sure you search for “Private tutor in [subject] to help with Master’s dissertation”. But for many students struggling with the dissertation, the guidance they tend to need is rarely with the specific subject-matter, but more the “how to” of researching, writing and managing a dissertation – and these are the areas that a Master’s coach or tutor is there to help with.

How much does a coach or private tutor for Master’s degree cost?

Most private tutors and academic coaches for Master’s degree students charge by the hour. While rates vary according to level of academic experience and expertise, £100 is a typical hourly rate for well-qualified private tutors for Master’s degrees or above.
